Facilitated by Katy Massey, founder of The Joyful Activists, and Fair Collective

You pour your energy, time, and heart into changing the world, but when did you last have the capacity to put yourself on the priority list? For activists, humanitarians, and charity people, burnout isn't a personal failing: it's a structural hazard. The systems we work in were not built with our wellbeing in mind, and individual self-care alone was never going to be enough.

This session goes beyond bubble baths and breathing exercises. It asks the questions: What does it mean to build cultures of care within our movements and organisations? How do we hold each other, not just ourselves? And what would it look like to treat collective wellbeing as a strategic priority, not an afterthought?

Katy Massey, Founder of The Joyful Activists, brings over 20 years of experience across the charity and humanitarian sector, a Masters in Education, Gender, and International Development with a specialism in Mental Health and Psychosocial Support, and a practice rooted in trauma-informed, decolonial approaches. She will weave together research, lived experience, and honest community conversation to explore what genuine, systemic wellbeing looks like for people working in service of others.

You will come away with:

  • An honest picture of where your wellbeing actually stands right now
  • A clearer understanding of how the systems and communities we work in shape our mental health
  • Questions and provocations to take back to your own organisation or community

Community and conversation are how we make sense of things, and how we recognise that we're rarely alone with our thoughts, stresses and worries. This session is spacious and unhurried, with whole-group and breakout conversations woven throughout. Quiet reflection and journaling space will always be available, and verbal participation is entirely at your own discretion.
