Background

Green Allotments, a registered charity, creates new, not-for-profit, private allotment sites for local communities in England at an affordable rent. Its mission is to increase the provision of allotment gardens, securing land, by purchase or donation.

Objectives of Fund

The funding is for 'anyone who is passionate about allotments' and willing to collaborate with Green Allotments to get new allotment land in their area. The focus is on community-led management and environmental stewardship, to ensure a sustainable future for allotments. The funder is keen to hear from residents who want to come together and get a new site for their area. Support can be provided to help form an allotment society to manage the new allotment site.

Green Allotments takes the approach of offering a peppercorn lease to the new allotment gardeners who will community-manage as an allotment society.

Who Can Apply

Applications are accepted from:

  • Constituted not-for-profit organisations in England.
  • Individuals who are aged 18 years or older and resident in England.
  • Note: the funder can offer support to groups who wish to set up as a constituted not-for-profit organisation.

Restrictions

The following are not eligible for funding:

  • All tiers of councils and statutory organisations.
  • Community Interest Companies (CICs) because this organisational structure does not meet the funder's model of a peppercorn lease.
  • For-profit organisations.
  • Allotments outside of England.
  • Individual community plots or community gardens that are already located on allotment sites or other lands.
  • Intermediary organisations to manage future allotment sites.

This stage of the funding programme is unlikely to fund new allotment sites where the cost of land purchase is more than £50,000 per acre.

Eligible Expenditure

The funding is to be used to purchase land for new non-profit allotment sites in England that will be community-led managed with a strong focus on environmental stewardship.
