About the Programme & Facilitator

The Kingston Voluntary Sector Leadership Programme, delivered between May and July 2025, brought together leaders from 10 Kingston organisations for a series of five in-person sessions. The programme was designed to support leadership development across the voluntary and community sector in Kingston, with a focus on reflection, peer learning, and practical tools.

The sessions were facilitated by Martin Farrell, an internationally recognised leadership coach and author of "Good Leaders in Turbulent Times". Martin’s facilitation style is highly participatory, encouraging deep listening, open dialogue, and collaborative problem-solving. His work is grounded in helping leaders navigate complexity and lead with authenticity.

Each session focused on a key theme:

  1. Building the Programme Content – Participants co-created the direction of the programme, identifying shared priorities and leadership challenges.
  2. Sustainability – Exploring how leaders can build resilient organisations, manage resources effectively, and plan for long-term impact.
  3. Building Successful Teams – Focusing on team dynamics, communication, and leadership styles that foster trust and collaboration.
  4. Building Relationships with External Partners – Strengthening partnerships across sectors, improving influence, and navigating external stakeholder relationships.
  5. Managing Relationships with the Board – Addressing governance, accountability, and how to lead effectively in partnership with trustees.

The final session was followed by a celebration lunch, giving participants a chance to reflect on their journey and connect informally.

As part of the programme, each participant received a signed copy of Martin’s book, Good Leaders in Turbulent Times, which complemented the learning and offered further insights into effective leadership in complex environments.

Programme Evaluation Report

Following the completion of the Kingston Voluntary Sector Leadership Programme, KVA produced an evaluation report to capture the outcomes, participant feedback, and recommendations for future development.

The report highlights:

  • The positive response from participants
  • Key themes explored across the five sessions
  • The impact on leadership confidence, strategic thinking, and peer connection

This evaluation has helped shape the next steps, including the creation of an email group and the planning of additional sessions with Martin Farrell to support the setting up of a self-managed framework.

To capture the spirit and impact of the programme, KVA produced a short video, featuring reflections from participants, Martin Farrell, and KVA CEO Sanja Djeric Kane. The video highlights the inspiration behind the programme and its value to the sector.
