Garfield Weston Foundation is a family founded grant-maker that gives money to support a wide range of charities across the UK. In total they donate around £100 million each year.

When Garfield Weston established the Foundation, he endowed it with shares in the family business, Wittington Investments who own the Richmond Hill Hotel, and the iconic store Fortnum & Mason in London. They also have some of the best-known brands in the UK including Primark, Twinings, Kingsmill, Ovaltine, Ryvita, and Patak’s.

What they will fund:

The Foundation makes 3 types of grants:

1. Capital Projects – This means building works or repairs, or equipment. They will expect you to have secured around 50% of capital funding prior to applying and they will fund 10–20% of your capital costs.

2. Operating/Core costs – This means towards the general running costs of your organisation and can be for 1, 2 or 3 years.

3. Projects/Specific Activity – These are for a specific project or area of your work and will have a specific time period.

They will fund organisations working in the following areas:

· Arts

· Community

· Education

· Environment

· Faith

· Health

· Museums and Heritage

· Welfare

· Youth

Your work can be in more than one of these areas:

You must be either:

· a UK registered charity

· charitable incorporated organisation (CIO)

· exempt and excepted under Charity Commission guidance

Application Process:

Take their eligibility quiz to see if you can apply for funding: https://garfieldweston.org/for-grant-applicants/eligibility-quiz/

To apply, you will also need to submit one of the following:

· your annual accounts, independently audited or examined

· a copy of your Charity Commission annual return

If you don’t yet have accounts, please wait until you do as your financial track record is an important part of their decision making.

There are 2 types of grants

1. Regular grants – under £100,000

If you want to apply for a grant of under £100,000, please visit the Garfield Weston website.

You will be asked to open an account and complete an online form.

There are no deadlines and applications are accepted throughout the year. It normally takes 4 months to determine a grant.

2. Major Grants - £100,000 and over

Grants of £100,000 and over are part of their Major Grants and these are considered by their Trustees at one of eight Board meetings per year. To be considered for a Major Grant, your organisation must either have an annual income of over £1 million, or your total project or capital costs must be over £1 million.

To begin your application first take the eligibility quiz above and then complete the online Expression of Interest Form. Further details can be found here.

You will be asked a few questions about what your organisation does, what it is raising funds for, how much the project costs, what the shortfall is and any relevant timings.

You can submit an Expression of Interest all year round and there are no deadlines for submission. If they want to take your idea forward, they will invite a full application.
