Overview
 

This session will focus on addressing misconceptions about Islam and the extreme narratives that misrepresent it.

 

This session will focus on tackling misconceptions about Islam and the

extreme narratives that distort its teachings, highlighting how these differ

completely from mainstream beliefs and practices. Professionals will explore

how these narratives are used to radicalise individuals, including the role of

online platforms and emerging misinformation. The session will improve

understanding of vulnerabilities, grievances, and the pathways through

which people may be drawn into extremist thinking. It will also equip

practitioners with the knowledge and confidence to recognise warning signs.

 

Aims:

Equip professionals with a clear understanding of extremist narratives

that misrepresent Islam and drive radicalisation.

Increase confidence in recognising and discussing sensitive terminology

and concepts around extremist ideologies.

Enhance ability to identify environments or situations where

misconceptions about Islam may be exploited to radicalise individuals.

Strengthen understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and the

Prevent framework.

Support professionals in reducing the risk of radicalisation by addressing

misinformation and extremist messaging.

 

Objectives:

Explain how extremist groups manipulate misconceptions about Islam to

radicalise individuals, both online and offline.

Explore emerging issues and the influence of significant national and

international events on extremist thinking.

Provide practical guidance on recognising warning signs and early

indicators of radicalisation linked to these narratives.

Develop skills to intervene safely, make referrals, and escalate concerns

through Prevent processes.

Equip professionals with strategies to challenge extremist narratives and

support vulnerable individuals in understanding mainstream Islam

accurately.
