Intersectionality of Domestic Abuse, Substance Use and Offending

Thursday 05 March 2026
13:00 to 15:30

The workshop focuses on the critical learning identified in a recent Drug and Alcohol Related Death Review with a domestic abuse lens.

This practitioner-led workshop focuses on the critical learning identified in a recent Drug and Alcohol Death Review (DARD). We will explore the complex lived experience of an individual situated at the intersection of substance use, domestic abuse, and a known history within the criminal justice system.

The event will be led by experts in substance use and domestic abuse.

The Workshop Focus

The session will be an interactive workshop rather than a lecture. Participants will work through the specific themes of the review to understand how these three pillars—substance use, domestic abuse, and offending—interact to create unique barriers to engagement and safety.

Key areas of exploration include:

  • The Offender Journey: Navigating support and supervision within the criminal justice system while managing substance use.
  • Domestic Abuse through a Dual Lens: Understanding the specific risks when domestic abuse intersects with substance use.
  • Systemic Learning: Identifying where multi-agency handovers and communications can be strengthened to prevent future tragedies.
