The Role of the Designated Safeguarding Lead & the Local Authority Procedures - Early Years (Kingston & Richmond)

This course is an induction for staff who are recently appointed or will soon be appointed to the role of the Early Years (EY) Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSL) and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads (DDSL) or for staff who are new to the borough of Kingston or Richmond (AfC).

Please note: This course does not replace the statutory safeguarding training required by KRSCP (Safeguarding level 1, 2 & 3) but is an 'addition' to support local knowledge.

Description

The session will enhance knowledge and skills to enable delegates to lead a culture of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children within their EY provision in Kingston and Richmond.

This is a multidisciplinary session arranged by the EY Advisory Team and delivered directly by relevant professionals representing key agencies in AfC: Kingston Richmond Safeguarding Children Partnership (KRSCP), Single Point of Access (SPA), Referral and Assessment Team, Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO).

The session will focus on:

  1. Brief review of the safeguarding requirements in relation to the EYFS & Ofsted expectations, including examples from local inspections
  2. The reminder of the roles and responsibilities of the DSL
  3. The role of key agencies in AfC in regards to safeguarding and child protecting
    • KRSCP - the role in LA
    • SPA - how the referral system works
    • Referral and Assessment Team - e.g. expectations in regards to Child Protection Conference, contributions to Child Protection Plans, working in partnership with Social Care colleagues
    • LADO - dealing with allegations against staff and the expectations
  4. Sharing relevant bank of resources aimed at EY providers

Outcomes

By the end of the session delegates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate confidence of staff in the role of DSL & DDSL
  • Examine knowledge and skills to create and maintain a safe and protective culture in line with the EYFS Statutory requirements and the LA processes
  • Explain clear information regarding the safeguarding systems in the borough of Kingston and Richmond (KRSCP, SPA, Referral and Assessment Team, LADO)
