Looking after our Mental Health

Tuesday 09 December 2025
09:30 to 12:30

Mental health affects all of us. With 1 in 4 UK adults experiencing mental health problems each year (NHS England, 2021), and at least 79% of people experiencing workplace stress in the UK (Perkbox, 2020), we know that our mental health is at risk.

This workshop explores how we can develop strategies to build our skills in stress management, resilience and perseverance. We can all improve our mental health, enabling us to tackle the challenges we face more easily and reducing the risk of burnout.

This half-day workshop explores the underlying causes of mental health and how we can embed strategies within our working lives to maintain and build our resilience.

The workshop will include a mixture of presentations of theory, concepts and self-reflective exercises in small groups.

Description

Mental health is a continuum, we want to ensure that as staff we are able to navigate workplace stress while maintaining our well-being.

Resilience is often talked about as the ability to bounce back. However, it is not easy to experience stress, challenge and hardship. Resilience is the ability to overcome barriers, keep going and potentially build our ability to tackle future challenges. Resilience is hard graft.

Martin Seligman has been working in the field of positive psychology since the 1960s, exploring optimism, pessimism and how we can look to flourish. His extensive research and studies have enabled him to develop the PERMA model which underpins the 5 areas all humans need to have positive wellbeing.

This workshop will explore how we can embed his concepts into our working lives to enable us to flourish within the workplace.
An inclusive and interactive workshop, this session will require delegates to get involved in quizzes, discussions and simple tasks to build their understanding and apply it to their roles.

This workshop will be delivered by Lydia Hughes, who is an experienced trainer with over six years of experience on the frontline as a youth worker, manager and course developer. Lydia is a CBT practitioner, with extensive knowledge of mental health, positive psychology and training staff to develop their own wellbeing She is passionate about enabling workers to reach their potential whilst maintaining their own wellbeing.
