Managing Racism in the Workplace

Wednesday 12 November 2025
10:00 to 11:00

‘Race discrimination, illegal in the UK since 1976, arises when someone is unfairly disadvantaged for reasons related to their race which, for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010, includes colour, nationality and ethnic or national origins. Caste may also be specifically included in future.

To change attitudes, organisations should promote an open culture of respect and dignity for all employees, and value difference’ (CIPD, 2020).

The workshop will give participants an opportunity to reflect on the construction of ‘race’ and how it influences professional interactions in the workplace. We will examine how the Black Lives Matter movement has created an opportunity to work towards a collective culture that is inclusive and applies anti-racist practices.

Description

The workshop will explore how ‘Race’ influences our daily interactions within the workplace.

You will have an opportunity to engage in constructive conversations with peers in small group discussions. You will be introduced to concepts that will aid in developing your thinking on the subject matter. There will be taught elements of the workshop, which will allow participants to go away with some learning to apply to their daily practice and interactions. Also, the trainer will be reliant on video clips, case studies and reflective exercises throughout the day.

In addition, we will explore the following areas and how that perpetuates the construction of 'race’ and 'racism':

    • How are different access to privilege influence our daily interactions?
    • We will look at how unconscious bias informs decisions we make and develop techniques to challenge these in a helpful way.
    • Consider how the construction of ‘race’ intersects with the other identities we hold.

This session will be delivered by Hendrix Hammond. Hendrix is a systemic psychotherapist, trainer and supervisor. He has 13 years of clinical experience working in Social Care, YOT, Schools and CAMHS. "Hendrix is passionate about supporting people to have meaningful conversations and has delivered training to various settings on race, difference and sexuality "
