This practical and friendly starter course is designed to help small charities and community organisations take the first steps in planning a website that works for them. Whether you're starting from scratch or rethinking your current site, we’ll guide you through the essentials of structure, content, and audience needs.
You’ll take part in interactive exercises to help you define your goals and audience and see examples of structures that work well.
You’ll start sketching out your own website structure. And have resources to take away to help you continue planning.
This session will cover
• How a website can support your organisation’s goals
• How to identify your audiences and what they’re looking for
• Common website structures and how to choose one that fits your organisation
• Planning your website pages and navigation
• Tips for writing content that’s easy to read and search engine friendly
• Tools and platforms available for building your site or creating content, including Voice Online Communities
Pre-course requirement
• Basic computer and internet skills • Access to a laptop or desktop computer • No technical expertise required!

Course format
Online interactive group training
This is an online interactive live training session. You'll take part in multiple interactive exercises. These may include breakout room discussions, use of collaborative tools and polls or quizzes. You'll be asked to complete individual tasks online or offline, which may include peer-group feedback. You may also be asked to complete a task before or after the session.
We're trying our best to give you a good classroom experience. Please join with video and bring your ideas, creativity, and challenges to share.
Trainers
Sorrel Parsons is our Digital Adviser & Training Manager at Superhighways and has 15 years' experience in supporting charities, community organisations and volunteers in the UK to communicate with the people that matter to them, demonstrate their impact and raise funds. Sorrel is a fan of making digital work on a shoestring.
Paul has been working with technology and websites for over 30 years. He has helped establish charitable CICs running local fund raising events (Kew Fete & Kew Village market) and worked with Charities in the Richmond/Kew area developing their websites and getting the most from the software available to them. Paul loves investigating new software products and helping organizations choose the most appropriate tools and get the most out of them to benefit their organisation.
