This course has been designed to support practitioners working with families where substance misuse may be an issue, providing key information to help practitioners with beginning to have open conversations with a family.

Description
The problematic use of drugs and alcohol by parents has the potential to have a huge impact on the lives of their children in many negative ways.
This 1 day course will look at the different types of drugs that are commonly misused and how these may cause problems for an individual and impact on their ability to parent. It will develop workers ability to ask suitable questions to support assessment of substance misuse, motivation for change and with providing advice and information to reduce harm in a way that is evidence based and client focussed.
The target audience are practitioners in contact with individuals and families where use of substances including alcohol may be an issue.
This course has been developed and facilitated by Achieving for Children’s Substance Misuse Specialist Worker who has an extensive background in working in various positions within drug and alcohol recovery services, criminal justice and mental health settings.

Outcomes
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Become aware of the commonly used substances and know which drug category they are a part of
- Describe how various drugs affect the body and mind
- Recognise indications of substance misuse
- Clarify terms such as; addiction, dependency, misuse
- Identify reasons why people use drugs and or alcohol
- Clarify when drug and or alcohol use becomes a problem
- Using the ‘cycle of change’ model to find ways to work with individuals effectively
- Be more confident in responding to familial substance use, helping families to minimise the impact of their use
- Support individuals to access services for harm reduction and or recovery treatment
