The Good Food Co-op

The Good Food Co-op is a not-for-profit service supplying fruit and veg boxes, but with a huge difference.

Every box you purchase helps a local family or individual in need to receive a box - making healthy food accessible to all. First orders for paying customers started in November.

Food insecurity has been heightened by the Covid-19 crisis. The Good Food Coop is an exciting new partnership between RBK, Voices of Hope, KingsGate Church and Kingston Voluntary Action. The Good Food Co-op also champions local, spray-free and ethically sourced produce.

The Kingston Courier has a great film on the Food Coop – see below.

Sarah Clay, director of Voices of Hope, says: “We were very aware that a lot of families, a lot of individuals were increasingly struggling with financial difficulty.
“So it wasn’t just an issue of having access to emergency food but of actually needing a system whereby we could help support, help subsidise access to healthy food.”

The first boxing of orders took place in November and saw five volunteers packing 42 orders of fresh fruit and vegetables from 8am.

Once the food was boxed, it was driven to local pick-up hubs or delivered directly by volunteers.

Sarah says: “It’s recognising that money isn’t the only thing you can give…it’s finding ways people can contribute and not expecting those to all be the same thing.”

Sarah has expressed hope that the initiative will eventually be self-sustaining and continue to tackle issues of food insecurity within the community.

Food for Thought - Food insecurity in 21st century Kingston is a report produced by Kingston Voluntary Action and Public Health in October 2018. Since then it has been KVA's aim to help develop a consistent, coordinated, strategic co-production approach to food insecurity in our borough that links to new and existing local initiatives.

Funding from the Coronavirus Community Support Fund, distributed by The National Lottery Community Fund, will help us to realise this goal. We would like to thank the Government for making this possible.
